Departmental Goals

The goal of the department is to provide students with the skills, knowledge and tools of science and engineering that will enable them to solve societal problems. This includes:

  • The optimal use of materials, energy and time through design of processes, machines, structures, mechanical and thermal systems and
  • Better understanding of dynamic processes including machine, structural, mechanical, material, and energy systems.

These processes and systems are crucial in the energy, aerospace, automotive, biomedical, construction, electronics and manufacturing industries.  They also play critical roles in health, national defense and infrastructure.

Currently, the department has 15 full time instructors. Besides internal academic staff, the department has visiting professors from foreign universities such as Tottori and Gifu university in Japan, as well as University of Siegen in Germany. The department also has active collaboration works in Research and Development with national institutions and corporations such as KeFRI, KenGen, Numerical Machining Complex (NMC) and KIRDI among others. These interactions provide opportunities for hands-on-learning opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students.

Facilities and Equipment

The department boasts of having arguably the most modern and trendy facility for quality engineering training both in Kenya and East Africa. The Advanced Design and Manufacturing and Training Centre (ADMATC) is the first of its kind in the universities and technical colleges in Kenya and is well equipped to cater for the practical aspect of the offered courses. Also present is the centre for material science and Nanotechnology boasting of state-of-the-art equipment for Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and X-ray Diffractometer (XRD). These facilities enable students to carry out research and practical sessions alongside theoretical learning so as to better understand various phenomenon in engineering systems. These facilities and equipment are also available to students from neighbouring schools and institutions after consultation with the vice chancellor’s office.
